During the presidency of Andrew Jackson, the nullification crisis took place. The nullification crisis was when South Carolina refused to pay the taxe or tariff, on certain goods. They questioned whether or not the federal government could make them pay the tax, due to states rights. South Carolina claimed that because of states rights, they could decide as a state, if they had to pay the tax. This was a major problem for the national government because if one state started doing this so could others and they needed the money. For example, any time a state didn’t like a tax or law, they could use states rights to get out of it, which would make the national government lose power. For this reason, it was critical for Andrew Jackson to get them to pay the tax. As you can see, the nullification crisis was an important time in our history.
